YES TO TIME IN THE CLOSET
The most valuable asset today is our TIME. We are a people who are constantly on the go. Running from one place to the next as well as being connected to some sort of social media. I think that the reason why Jesus prayed at night was to get away from all the distractions of the day. I literally go into my closet to avoid distractions and to make my TIME with God intentional. I have tried to have time with God during the day in my room, but I keep getting distracted with the light coming through the blinds and different things going on in my life that take away my concentration. There is just something about the environment of being in a dark quiet room. The last few weeks I have been spending time with God in my closet. I throw some pillows on the floor and just sit or kneel before my God.
He chose us first so we should choose to give Him our TIME
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit--fruit that will last--and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. John 15:16
My priorities were shifted
I have grown in my knowledge of Christ at a rapid speed because I decided to give Him my TIME. In this season of my life, I am learning that I want to grow even deeper in the knowledge of God. I have put a cap on the greatness of God in the past and I don’t want to make the same mistake again. He is limitless.
There is something very attracting about the ocean. It's endless beauty and nature brings peace. Looking at the ocean, we cannot determine the depth nor width. This is how our God is. Let’s not limit Him with just what we already know or have experienced. He can open up to us in new ways and in greater ways. When we take TIME to get to know God, He becomes known to us in ways we could not have dreamed of.
For the One whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit. John 3:34
Worship Him as God.
Once we believe that we are righteous (bad connection or no connection), we are able to worship God. The enemy wants to keep us from knowing the truth about Jesus and who we are. Hosea 4:6 says that “my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge”. So many people are in darkness, broken and hurting today because they don’t have the knowledge of Jesus.
We were created to worship God and this is our purpose. The first thing that we can do when we are in our closets is give Him honor and praise. We need to turn away from distractions and be present with our minds, bodies and our souls. We worship him daily: in our prayer closets, by being His hands and feet, and by singing songs of praise.
Thanking God for all the things He is doing and has done
In Romans chapter 3, it says that we have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God. The second thing that we can do in our closet TIME is simply being thankful. Thanking God for sending Jesus. Without the sacrifice of Jesus, we would not have the access to God. Thanking God for everything transforms our mind. It is so easy to thank God for all the good things that happen to us.. When both my husband and I lost our jobs 7 years ago, it was a scary time for us. I didn't understand why I was thanking God for a bad situation but the Spirit knew what I needed at that moment, and my life has not been the same since (see full story). So the question arises; Do we thank God even when we are not fine? Or do we only thank God for the blessing that flow in.
Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
Remember how Job prayed and said: do we only accept great things from the Lord? I understand that we do live in a fallen world and that most of our turmoil comes from the enemy. But God allows us to go through certain things for our own benefit. Have you ever heard of people who practically go through hell on earth and are still able to say that they are glad that they went through it. Sounds pretty messed up if you ask me. But I too can state that I am glad that I went through my financial hardship. "I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want". Philippians 4:12
Conversations with Him
A third thing we can do in our closet TIME is talk and listen. I started using an example from someone that I consider to be my person. Every morning he says “good morning God”. It's so simple, yet so powerful. I use it as a conversation starter with God. Then I tell God what I am going through: I tell Him my hurt and pain. I talk about the things that bother me, the things I struggle with and don’t understand. Since God already knows everything, I think that the key is to be opened and honest with God and more so with ourselves. In my closet TIME, I ask Him lots of questions, I ask for advice and direction. Then I listen to His voice.
Below is one of my favorite verses; it gives us the assurance that when we make TIME to be in the closet with God, He will take away all the burdens of our hearts and give us freedom.
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”Matthew 11:28-30
Listen to His voice
It takes time and practice to hear His voice. I believe that God always talks to us but we simply don’t take the TIME to stop in our busy, high intense lives to hear Him. If you have not had the experience to hear God’s voice, I challenge you to press in and listen. His voice is soft and tender. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. John 10:27
If someone would have told me what God would be doing in my life these last 5 years, I would have probably laughed and said “ya right”. Seriously, only God could have and is doing everything in me and through me. One example of what God is doing through me is blogging. People who know me can validate that I am really not that good on my own. But because of Christ in me, I can stand up boldly, do, and be everything God has called me to be. All because I repeatedly chose to go into my closet.
I want to grow in my knowledge of God on a regular basis and I will no longer put a limit on Him. There is so much more that God wants to reveal to us, but it all depends on us. Taking TIME to unplug from all of our distractions is the first step to growing in the knowledge of God. Are we willing to invest our TIME in our own closets?
