Have you ever told someone that you will be praying for them, but never did. I have done this in the past and it made me feel so bad, once I realized that I never prayed. The first thing to reflect on is the verbal promise that was made but not kept. Next, the obligation to the other person. Since we are not holding up our end of the promise, we are letting the other person down. Lastly, if someone has asks for prayer or shares a situation with us, they are in need of our prayer support.
ASK FOR PRAYERS AND PRAY FOR OTHERS
A few weeks ago I wrote on who is your person. This is someone who will have your back. It’s so important to have someone who you can count on, learn from and be encouraged by. I am ALWAYS asking others for prayer when I am in need because I have seen the power of prayer from when we come together.
Again, I tell you truly that if two of you on the earth agreeabout anything you ask for, it will be done for youby My Father in heaven. For where two or three gather together in My name, there am I with them.” Matthew 18:19,20.
I have had too many instances in the past where I promised to pray for someone but either never did or maybe quickly prayed as a one time deal. It’s not a salvation issue and God will not be upset with us if we don’t pray. But I was convicted about my obligation to the person that I promised to pray for and never did.
it's better that you don't promise than that you do promise and not follow through. Ecclesiastes 5:5.
About a year ago, I was going through some challenging issues in my life and with ministry, so I asked people (mostly in text messages) to pray for me. The issues were resolved, I thanked God and I forgot about it. Two months later, I got together with one of “my persons” who I had asked for prayer from. In our conversation, the topic about my prayer request came up. She wanted to know since the issues were resolved, could it be taken off her prayer list. I was shocked. I remember experiencing electricity from my head to my toes. Boy was I grateful to God for people like her, who would cover me in prayer that way. I was speechless. I had never experienced this type of loyalty from anyone, and if someone had been praying for me like this (which is highly likely since we all belong to ONE body of Christ), I had not been aware of it.
LET OTHERS KNOW THAT YOU ARE PRAYING AND FOLLOW UP
When we do something for others, it’s ok to let them know because it will bless them. Don’t believe the lies of the enemy whispering something like: it may be prideful for you to make known to people what you are doing. It's actually the opposite, just as I shared my experience. It made me want to do the same for others.
I needed prayers in those moments. When I found out that someone cared enough for me, kept their promise and pray diligently, I was astonished. Not only that but I experienced the power of the prayers and could recall the sweet presence of peace, love, and joy that assisted me in getting through those tuff moments.
KEEP YOUR PROMISE
After that scenario, I transformed the ways I prayed and pray for others. When someone asks me for prayer, I make sure to pray on the spot if they are right there, or pray right away if it’s a virtual request. Of course if the situation allows me to. This is so that I would not forget later on. For instance, if I’m in a meeting or busy with some important matter, I will obviously not get to the request right away.
I try to follow up with the person in need of prayer. This is for them to know that I really do care. Also, if the problem is resolved, together we can give God all the glory. Furthermore, I would be released from my obligation to the specific request because I want to be available to pray for others who may be in need.
I am trying to be more diligent and organized with the prayer requests because I know that I have an obligation to the people who I promised to pray for. In the past, I have had prayer requests all over the place. I had notes on paper laying around and in different journals as well as on my phone notes.
I recently started being more diligent by writing down all the prayer requests in one separate prayer journal. I bring it with me into my prayer closet. Sometimes I feel like I have a shopping list for God, but it has blessed me as well as others to see all the answered prayers. In my prayer closet, there are days when I don’t read off every single request. I just pray in general. Other days, God puts the need before me and I pray on it throughout my day, even when I am out and about.
16. Rejoice at all times. 17. Pray without ceasing.18. Give thanks in every circumstance, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16,17,18.
We don’t have to let people know every single time that we are praying and following up in order to be a blessing to someone. God already covers them through prayer and protection, but it encourages people like it did with me. This is another example of how important it is to surround ourselves with Godly men and women who will lift us up in prayer. Based on the way someone treated me during one of my most vulnerable moments, I now take prayer requests very seriously. I have also learned not to beat myself up if I forget to pray for someone. I know that God has them covered anyways. My point is that you need to find ways of praying for people that work for you in what ever season you are in your life. We should not focus on every single detail to perfect prayer and miss the actual point of it, which is talking to God or pleading with God on someone else's behalf.. I shared in last week's post on how I used to pray but it was more repetative and not coming from the heart. I think that the main reason why God wants us to pray for each other is to grow our faith and also so that He will be glorified. In answered prayers, we are able to see the miracles being unfolded.
I would love to hear some of your stories, comment below. Looks like I will be hanging out in the topic of prayer for a while. Next week i will be talking about praying with expectancy. If there is something that you would like me to cover about prayer, please let me know. As always, if there is anything you need prayer for (I will really pray and follow through) or have questions, It would be my pleasure to serve you. Contact me here
