In order to hear from God, we must listen. God does speak to each one of us but it is up to us to take the time to learn His voice among all the noise that we experience on a daily basis. We may need to get rid of some distractions. Jesus isolated Himself to be with God. What is distracting us from hearing God’s voice today? Too much busyness, social life, daily responsibilities? Let’s reevaluate our lives and make room to hear from God.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me John 10:27
In order for God to know who we are, we must believe and press into hearing his voice and following Him. This is not just for the elect but for everyone. I grew up with the understanding that only ordained ministers and certain “godly” people could hear from Him. This is not true. We ALL have access to hearing from God because when we believe, we become His.
Yet to ALL who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God- John 1:12
How do I hear from God?
God can speak to us in many different ways through:
- People: everyone, even nonbelievers
- Spirit (His spirit into our spirit)
- Word (Bible)
- Worship Songs
- Nature: beach, water, park, mountains, snow, rain
In the last days,' God says, 'I will pour out my Spirit upon ALL people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. Acts 2:17
God is always speaking to us but it’s up to us to press in and hear Him. What has God been saying to you in this season? Gods voice is very still and calm. God is a Spirit and He speaks into the Spirit in us. God's voice can be mixed up with our own thoughts. The enemy plants thoughts in our minds too so we should always double check what we accept. When I write, God gives me the words because when I go back to reading it, it’s as if I am reading it for the first time. I know that it was not me but the God in me who conveyed the information through me.
Knowing His voice:
How do I know that it's God’s voice and not my own thoughts or the voice of the enemy?
When we spend time with God we become familiar with His voice and are able to distinguish it from other voices. About a year ago I was worshiping the Lord and out of nowhere this though came to me: you're stupid! The way it was aimed at me "you're" as if someone was saying it to me. I know that it was not my thought because i was focused on worship. It goes against the Word of God as it is written that I am the righteousness of God. We need to remember that Satan knows the Bible, he tempted Jesus with the it. Jesus was able to avoid temptation by using the Word of God. The Bible is the most reliable tool for distinguishing voices that we hear.
The first time that I remember hearing God’s voice was about 3-4 years ago. I asked God "why am I not happy?" I was in such a good place in my life. I had a regular relationship with God, accomplished everything that I ever wanted in life, and I was even driving my dream car. I became upset with myself because I didn’t understand why I was still unhappy. God spoke to me so clearly that day. In my thoughts I heard a small still voice say “you don’t have me.” I broke down. I understood that it was because I was not ‘fully living” for Him. After that realization, I followed Him and started to live for Jesus wholeheartedly. I followed the examples of Jesus. Since that moment, my life has not been the same. The Word says "why do you call me Lord, Lord but don’t do what I SAY?"I’m sure that He spoke to me before this incident but I just didn’t hear Him or maybe I didn't understand how to hear His voice.
5 But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” John 10:5
Sometimes we hear God but because what God is asking us to do is out of our comfort zone so we dismiss it. Do you remember being a kid and your parents calling you 10 times before you answered? They would have to use their LOUD VOICE because you didn’t want to answer or you were too busy to. Sometimes I pretended that I didn’t hear my parents even when I recognized the tone of their voices. I knew that once I answered, I would be doing work and I didn't want to work because I was playing or doing my own things. At times, God has to use a certain tone to get our attention because we keep ignoring him.
Does it align with Gods Word?
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28
When satan told Jesus to jump off the mountain, even though he said that the angels would catch Jesus (which is true and according to God's Word), but the actual situation didn’t align with God’s Word and Jesus was able to desern and answer satan back using the Word of God.
When God speaks to us, even if the situation seems absurd at the moment and we may not understand or agree with it, check if it’s lined up with the Word of God. Is there God’s peace in it? If yes then it’s from God.
We should not be asking ourselves whether or not God speaks to us but why have we not heard His voice for x,y,z situations? Maybe you have never heard His voice or maybe it’s been a long time since you have heard it because you just got too busy to stop and listen. God is still speaking to you. All you need to do is stop and listen to what He has to tell you in this season.
"Come to me, all who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Matthew11:28. You don’t have to worry because God is telling you that He has got you in the palm of His hand and that He is handling the situation. He says “son/daughter, help is around the corner, hold on to Me, Rest in Me.” God has gotten you through this far, His promises are that "He will be there for you". Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."Deuteronomy 31:6. God says “watch and trust in this season and see what I will do.” "Now then, stand still and see this great thing the LORD is about to do before your eyes! 1 Samuel 12:16. I am so excited for what God is about to reveal to you. Hold on to His promises and write them down so that you can go back on them.
