How do we come to know God?
We first admit that we have sinned against God and need Jesus in our lives. Then we accept and believe that we are saved, the gift of salvation is received by faith. It’s not by laws or rules that God has opened up to us, but by His Spirit when we believed.
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9
I grew up in a Christian home and was familiar with the rules and exceptions. For most of my life I lived like a FAKE Christian (my full story). Only when I renewed my mind from the old way of thinking was I able to fully understand God’s will for my life and why I was created. I honestly think that once I renewed my mind is when I truly repented (repentance literally means to TURN). I turned from my old way of living and began to live as a TRUE Christian. Before then, I didn’t know that I had a purpose and plan for my life and that I was predestined by God (Jeremiah 1:5 ). I simply did the “Christian things” out of obligation and not necessarily because I wanted to.
The veil that separated us from God is lifted when we repent of our sins and our old life and accept Jesus Christ into our hearts.
The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you. Romans 8:11
But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into His image with intensifying glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3:16-18
Jesus truly unveiled the eyes of my heart and I began to live for Him. I asked God to help me get to know him on a personal level. I was no longer satisfied with knowing who God was. I wanted to experience Him. I prayed for God to give me the desire for His word. I know some of you might think my prayer was childish but I was real with God. God knows everything; He knows when we are REAL or when we are FAKE. Lets be honest with ourselves: If we are fake christians, what good is it for us or for God? If our kids tell us that they love us but don’t obey us, shouldn’t we question their love for us? It’s the actions and fruits that prove what we really believe. Abraham picked up the knife to kill his only son. He proved to God that he trusted God. “Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say? Luke 6:46. We should take the example from Abraham and act on what God is calling us to do.
I wanted to experience Him. I prayed for God to give me the desire for His word.
Why spend time with God?
The Spirit within us is hungry to fellowship w God. When we believe, God’s Spirit lives in us and He constantly longs to talk with the Father in Heaven through our spirit. If we don’t talk to God, we have a void or emptiness in our soul. It is like an empty gas car. It can’t go anywhere and actually looses it’s purpose. When our soul is empty, this causes all kinds of mischiefs in our lives because we loose our purpose for which we were created (to worship God). We start to feed our soul with the wrong stuff. We loose peace all the time, become angry, jealous, greedy, ect.
How do I spend time with God?
Find your own way to be with God and to worship God because we all have our own unique ways. I listen to worship music, pray, and study the word. When praying, don’t always ask for stuff – God is a spirit and He simply wants to be in the presence with you. So JUST BE WITH GOD!!!!!
Worship has nothing to do with how we feel but everything to do with God. I worship in my writings. When I spend time with God, He gives me revelations and puts bible verses in my mind that helps me or sometimes it’s for other people.
If I don’t know what to pray – I thank Him for everything. Start a journal just of all the things that you are thankful for. You will be amazed at what God is doing in your life.
Study the word. God speaks to us through His word. I’m sure many of you have heard that the Bible is the living word. It really does come to life when we open it and ask God to give us the desire and revelation. You will see how your current situation will come to life through the word of God. I love to listen to the Bible on the "Bible app" of my phone while I'm out and about.
Make a commitment
I started to spend time with God for 20 minutes a day. I would set an alarm on my phone as a reminder. So for 10 minutes I prayed and the other 10 minutes I studied the word. It is crucial to have a balance of prayer and reading the Bible. If we only pray; we become too spiritual and weird. If we only read the word, then we can become like the Pharisees. Statistics show that it takes about 3 weeks to make or break a habit. Lets stay committee to our goals. I remind my kids daily that it is their responsibility to spend time with God. I cannot do it for them.
What if I’m too busy to make time?
God is sincere with people who are sincere towards Him. If in your season all you have is 5 minutes in your car, God honors your heart and motives and will bless you with what you can give Him. Jesus said that the widow gave the most because she gave her ALL or her best. We each have 24 hours a day and we choose how to distribute our time. Are there things that we need to reevaluate to create time for God?
If you really want to grow , you need to replace the thing that takes most of your time with seeking God. For me it was TV. I kind of have an addictive personality with slight OCD. I was heavily into TV drama about 10 years ago. Once God unveiled my eyes, I replaced TV with studying the word and praying. I am not at all saying this to brag in any way or to say that I don’t like TV drama once in a while. When we seek God with all of our heart, we began to reflect Him.
Don't give up, keep pressing forward
The hardest thing for me are the distractions: social media, phone, and a million other things that creep in when I make a commitment to unplug and to “be with God”
When I’m quiet, things start to pop up in my mind and they are relevant. What I find works for me is to write them down quickly so I don’t forget and go back to “be with God”. Like with anything we do in life, spending time with God takes practice. How many of us know that we have to workout but never make it to the gym? But when we do, we feel so good and our body thanks us for it. Just be honest with yourself and be honest with God. Tell God about your fears, doubts, failures, and struggle. He is ready to listen and longing to be with you.
I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. Ephesians 1:17
